Our members have been very busy through the fall getting beef projects ready to go so today we bring you some news from last year!
The Irricana 4-H Beef members headed over to Pieschel Farms on the 25th of October for our Beef Prospect Clinic. Devon & Rae-lee Erikson and family raise Black Angus, Simmental, SimAngus, polled Herefords and commercial cattle. They are very passionate about cattle and love to compete in cattle shows. They have a great eye for picking out show steers and replacement heifers.
They had 2 heifers tied up in the barn for us to see and use as an example of what character traits to look for and most importantly, why. We went over every part of the animal, top to bottom, even how to watch them walk a perfect stride. We went over this information for both a heifer and a steer, because they have different purposes, you would look for different traits. Then we went outside where they had 2 different pens, one with a bunch of yearling bulls and another with yearling heifers. Each member went into the pen and got to have a good look at each and every animal. We then talked with Devon or Rae-lee about which animal we would pick as our prospect and gave them our reasons why. It was a great live demonstration and their feedback is always positive. I think all the members felt confident after the clinic to go out and pick the top steer and/or heifer for this year’s 4-H project.
Thank you Devon & Rae-lee Erikson/Pieschel Farms for presenting and hosting our Beef members! And another thank you to Grandpa (Gary Pieschel) for watching Peyson & Nash, while mom & dad prepared and presented to our Club. Thank you to the Beef Leaders Rachelle, Trish, Lindsey and Curtis, and the parents & members.
