Hands-On Learning at the Sheep Grooming & Showmanship Clinic

Our Irricana 4-H Beef & Multi Club sheep members spent the day learning, growing, and getting hands-on at our Sheep Grooming & Showmanship Clinic hosted at Wheatland Equestrian.

This past weekend we had our Sheep Grooming and Showmanship Clinic.  At this clinic, hosted at Wheatland Equestrian (Heather and Jesse Tanner’s), us sheep members learned a whole bunch of tips and tricks to becoming an amazing sheep member. It was a really fun and helpful day, and we got to learn lots of new things while working with our sheep.

We were split into four groups: cleavers, first year juniors, second and third year juniors, and intermediates. Each group had a senior member as our group leader, which was really helpful because we could ask questions and learn from people with more experience.

At our clinic, we had special guests Scott and Tori Anderson come and teach us all about grooming and showmanship. Scott taught us all about showmanship and how to show your lambs, how to set them up properly and how to show off your lamb the best. Tori taught us all about grooming! She taught us about carding, brushing, trimming, and other grooming skills to help our sheep look their best.

Something I learned in showmanship with Scott was how to properly trade places with someone when we are lined up in the show ring, which is really important. Something I learned in grooming was that you have to wipe and clean inside their ears, which I didn’t know before.

Scott and Tori were really great at teaching and answering all of our questions, and they made everything easy to understand.

All members with a market project also had their photos taken to be uploaded to our club’s catalogue, which was exciting.  It will be coming out soon, so keep an eye out for it!

Overall, it was a really great clinic and I learned a lot. We want to thank the Tanners for hosting, Scott and Tori for sharing their knowledge, the parents, and all the members who helped make the day so fun and successful.
